The flowers of war - Movie review

It is great that there are more than English movies that reproduce WW2 stories. Wait! That you can find WW2 movies that are not 'English' based. From the war movies I have watched, they are usually situated in the U.S., England, France or Japan. I think it's the first time I view one that is based on a massacre that happened in Nanjing, China. With all the war stories and movies I've heard, this was a first for me.

It is based on a westerner who gets stuck pretending to be a father (or a priest) to a group of schoolgirls. Not long after, some women from a brothel find their way into the church to hide. When Japanese soldiers invade the church, the women get lucky, but the schoolgirls get chased by them. The westerner does his best to protect them, yet he gets knocked down. Suddenly he gets help from a Chinese soldier who is very good at hiding and shoots some of the Japanese. It triggers them to retreat. The next day, a Colonel comes over and makes a promise that if the girls sing to him, he will make sure they are protected. When he re-visits, he hands an invitation that the priest declines. The Colonel says they have no choice. Afraid for the girls the women plan a scheme.

Want to find out? It is best you watch it!

Quick tip: Don't know Mandarin or Japanese? Make sure to have the subtitles. I, unfortunately didn't have them. Thankfully I can understand facial expressions well enough.
